Today we headed over to the Silverlake area for what is listed at yelp.com as one of the best Tortas in LA. Well I wanted to find out for myself.
If your not really sure about what a Torta is let me school you. A Torta is a mexican sandwhich that typically consists of a thick bread in the case of Super Tortas it's a Bolillo Bread which was toasted on the grill I think. The inner workings of the sandwich will consist of your typical mexican prepared meats. Asada, Carnitas, Pollo hahhaa. Yeah Beef, Pork and Chicken. Now the difference between Tortas typically comes in with the extras. Tortas usually consist of beans, avocado, lettuce, tomato and onions. You know I have to add cheese to everything I eat if I can so mine will usually have cheese. Today I decided to not add cheese so as to be sure to get the full flavor of the Torta at Super Tortas.
I left the office at noon with two of my co-workers and we had to drive about 2 miles to get there. We had to park across the street at the Ross (which was super packed in the middle of the day during a recession after kids already went back to school). The parking lot at Super Tortas is really small and kinda of crammed. We go in and make our decisions.
Paul orders a burrito (why go to a Torta place and order a burrito is beyond me). Edgar gets the Ribeye Steak Torta. I get the Malinesa Torta. We were told the difference between the two Tortas we ordered is that the Ribeye Steak meat is basically Asada while my sandwich was breaded ribeye steak. The sandwiches come and Edgar and I decide to switch half of our sandwiches so we can try both.
My first bite was into the Ribeye Torta. The meat was juicy the bread had a wonderful toasty flavor. The Milanesa Torta is just a bad idea. The meat was pounded to death and then breaded and fried. The meat was crunchy on the edges and it was dry dry dry. I asked for my sandwich with no tomatoes which was a bad idea. A tomato would have given this sandwich a little bit of life. I was very happy that we came up with the idea of switching out halves of the sandwiches otherwise I would have left there hungry and full of Root Beer.
The service was absolutely excellent I was back at my desk at 12:50. Although overall, I think it should be Just Okay Tortas vs. Super Tortas.
If the hubby and I can get along we're supposed to test out soup recipes over the weekend. He decided to pick up a book with 100 soup recipes in it and we're supposed to work on it together. If you see no blog or pictures of soup on Monday you'll know how my weekend went.
